For Special Education Teachers ·
What you'll accomplish
By the end of this guide, you'll be using ChatGPT to generate behavior intervention strategy suggestions, BIP language, and reinforcement menu ideas — giving you a strong starting point for team discussions instead of starting from a blank page.
What you'll need
Before opening ChatGPT, collect your notes. You need:
You don't need perfect data — even general observations are useful for generating starting strategies.
Go to chat.openai.com. In a new conversation, start with:
I'm a special education teacher developing behavior intervention strategies. I need help brainstorming antecedent strategies, replacement behaviors, and consequence strategies for a Behavior Intervention Plan. I'll share ABC data and you'll suggest strategies. All suggestions are starting points for team review — I understand you're not making clinical recommendations.
Share your ABC summary without any identifying information:
Student profile: [grade]-grade student with [disability].
Behavior: [describe specifically — e.g., "leaves assigned area without permission, occurs 4-6 times per day, typically lasts 2-5 minutes"]
Antecedents: [what triggers it — e.g., "most often during independent work tasks, math more than reading, transitions between activities"]
Consequences: [what happens — e.g., "teacher redirects, student returns to seat after 2-3 minutes; sometimes gets 1:1 teacher attention during redirection"]
Hypothesized function: [escape/attention/sensory/access]
Please suggest: 5 antecedent strategies, 3 replacement behaviors, and appropriate consequence strategies for this BIP.
ChatGPT will generate a categorized list of strategies. Review them for:
Highlight the 2-3 strategies from each category that you think are most promising.
What you should see: Organized lists like:
Troubleshooting: If suggestions seem generic, add more specific detail about the student's communication level and what strategies have been tried before.
Once you've selected the strategies you want to use, ask ChatGPT to draft the BIP intervention plan language:
Based on these selected strategies: [list the ones you chose], draft BIP plan language that describes how we will implement these interventions. Format it for an IEP document with clear, measurable language.
Print or copy the ChatGPT-generated strategies. Bring them to your team meeting with the school psychologist, BCBA, or behavior support team. Use it as your brainstorm document, not a finished plan. The team's professional judgment and knowledge of the specific student is what creates an effective BIP.
BIP strategy brainstorm:
Student: [grade], [disability]. Behavior: [description, frequency]. Antecedents: [triggers]. Function: [escape/attention/sensory]. Suggest antecedent strategies, a replacement behavior, and consequence plan for a BIP.
Reinforcement menu:
Suggest a reinforcement menu for a [age]-year-old who likes [interests]. Include token economy options, natural reinforcers in a classroom setting, and social reinforcers. Keep suggestions practical for a regular school day.
Incident documentation:
Rewrite these incident notes as objective documentation using observable language only. Notes: [bullet points].
BIP plan language:
Draft BIP intervention plan language for these strategies: [list]. Format for an IEP document. Describe implementation steps clearly.
